Why Bathroom and Kitchen Remodeling Sometimes Takes Longer

Taking on a remodeling job in your bathroom or kitchen is a lot different than doing so in any other room. For one thing, you’re moving fixtures rather than furniture. And then there’s the plumbing—something you don’t have to deal with when you’re expanding a living room or remodeling a bedroom.

We warn our clients that the remodeling process could take a bit longer than expected in some cases, giving them a range of time and factoring in any potential changes that may come up. So why can’t we give an upfront estimate? What causes the uncertainty in timespan?

You Make a Change Order

When you, the homeowner, decide to make a change to the original remodeling plan, it can set off a time delay that lasts longer than you think. Don’t be surprised to hear that changing one or two things can set you back weeks, as your contractor’s plan has now required major revisions.

Plumbing or Electrical Issues Come Up

It’s common that we find you need a plumbing or electrical upgrade. For your safety, or to spare you from thousands of dollars in structural damage later on, you must have plumbing and electrical issues taken care of before the job can be completed. This can add significant time to the job.

You’re Relying on People

A good contractor will have the right people ready to go and signed up for the job. But some things are out of their control. For example, if you need to bring in an inspector for the city, it can take a long time to schedule one—even though the actual inspection can be completed in about 20 minutes.

Also, let’s face it: people are people. Someone might get sick, someone you trusted could bail out on the work, or a task could take longer than expected. And that’s something you’ll have to deal with. Luckily, if you choose good contractors, such disruptions are kept to a minimum.
